Never been this proud to be an American.
Since I have arrived in Lebanon, I have found myself time and again ashamed to call myself an American. Everyone here thinks that all Americans are automatically Christians. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard, “You’re American, so you’re Christian, right?” Well… I am a Christian yes, but I am a Christian because I do follow Jesus Christ. I do not mean to sound arrogant, because I know that I do NOT do the best job of displaying that I folllow Christ at all times. I have faults, I am imperfect that I know for sure. But America is not a Christian Nation. They look at our media and associate Christianity with it. How embarrassing. No wonder they all think we are hypocrites. Not to mention our extreme ethnocentrism and no need to feel like we should know any other language beside English.
My group met a girl today who is from Iraq. She recently moved here. She explained her recent experience in Iraq. “American soldiers would come into our home often. They would search our house for guns. Then they would sit down and have tea with us, laugh with us, and show us pictures of their families.”
Moved me to tears. I was proud to be American today. Praise God for our soldiers.
